Jamieson Cox: A thought inspired by having spent the whole night streaming the Smile...

Jonathan cuts through my Beach Boys sentimentality and reminds me that maybe things aren’t so bad. Two notes:

  • I took the #1 hit fact from the Billboard website. I sincerely hope their own site has the right information.
  • Regardless of what you think about the contemporary pop world (and I understand the Rihanna/Britney/Gaga/Beyoncé point but damn, the current top 10 is putrid), these Smile tracks are a must-listen. I’m sure many Beach Boys diehards have heard them in one form or another, but now there’s an easy entry point for new fans and a tidy compilation of pop that’s still surprising and forward-thinking.

And here is why you never trust that guy on the Internet.

I’m totally down with Beach Boys sentimentality. (Though in my canon, “God Only Knows” > “Good Vibrations.”) It’s ’60s sentimentality I can’t abide!

No disagreement about the current top ten, either. Could fucking Drake be the closest thing to a good song on there?

As someone with an interest in the charts, I couldn’t let this go: “Good Vibrations” entered the Hot 100 on October 22, 1966 (at #81). It hit #1 on December 10, 1966. And in my humble opinion, 1966 was maybe the greatest run of number-ones in the Hot 100’s history. Almost any other year (2011 included) is going to pale in comparison.
