The Auteurs - “Future Generation”
from How I Learned to Love the Bootboys (1999)

This would have been the perfect pick for Closing Time if I’d have thought of it earlier: the final track of the final Auteurs album, released at the close of the ’90s. The lyrics call it “the story of the band” and reference the group’s back catalogue (“of course I love the old songs/ from New Wave to Murder Park”)! It’s everything Luke Haines distilled into one song, from his sarcasm and nihilism to his anti-nostalgia and hate-crush on the ’70s! And, best of all, it’s looking ahead to the future generation that will finally embrace his genius!
